From Brownfield to Creative Hub: The Artery Opens in Grand Junction

A new chapter in downtown Grand Junction’s revitalization is officially underway with the grand opening of The Artery, a community arts hub developed by the Grand Valley Creative Alliance (GVCA).

Located at 539 Colorado Avenue, The Artery celebrated its grand opening on July 14, transforming an existing downtown property into a vibrant space where artists and community members can create, collaborate, and connect. The facility features dedicated studios for ceramics, fiber arts, printmaking, and mixed media, along with space for workshops, meetings, events, and community programming.

The project also demonstrates how brownfields resources can help support community-driven redevelopment. Earlier this year, GVCA received funding through Colorado’s 1306 Brownfields Cleanup Program to assist with environmental cleanup associated with the redevelopment. By addressing environmental conditions that can complicate the reuse of existing properties, brownfields funding helped support GVCA’s broader vision for bringing the site back into productive community use.

GVCA purchased the downtown property in 2025 and undertook an extensive renovation and conversion of the building. Today, The Artery provides a permanent home for the organization while creating shared infrastructure for artists throughout the Grand Valley.

Projects like The Artery highlight the broader impact of brownfields redevelopment. Addressing environmental challenges can do more than prepare a property for reuse; it can help unlock investment, strengthen downtown districts, and create new spaces that serve the community for years to come.

The Colorado Brownfields Partnership congratulates the Grand Valley Creative Alliance and its partners on the opening of The Artery and the successful transformation of this downtown Grand Junction property.
