CBP’s latest case study spotlights the transformation of the long-vacant Holy Trinity Convent & School in downtown Trinidad. Built in the late 19th/early 20th centuries and empty since 2004, the site tested positive for widespread asbestos and lead. With a $1 million EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant awarded in 2023, Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community Center is pursuing a phased abatement (partial removal and safe encapsulation) to move redevelopment forward. The plan preserves the landmark’s historic character while enabling new community uses—such as workforce housing, a hostel, and a café/restaurant—and showcases a strong public-private partnership (EPA, the City, Stantec, and others) aimed at catalyzing investment and downtown revitalization in Trinidad.
